Years ago knife designer Lucas Burnley brought the iconic Squid to life. Skyrocketing in popularity as a compact carry, the folding knife became a top choice for those looking to strike the right balance of simplicity, performance, and functionality. In 2022 Lucas took a stab at reimagining this time-honored design with the larger SQUID™ XM. Still checking the box of being a versatile everyday carry, the longer blade length handles tasks both big and small—and is now recognized as a bit more “extra medium” in size.
Keeping the blade width at nearly one inch and using the drop-point style, Burnley was able to give it a good balance of tip strength and point geometry for utility tasks, packing all the functionality of a full-size tactical folder into an easy to carry, compact design. The original XM came with a frame lock, for 2025 CRKT® has released three new versions of the Squid XM with a button lock. The button lock is intuitive and provides easy one hand closing. The easy-to-access thumb stud paired with the IKBS™ ball bearing pivot provides for a smooth opening blade. This version comes with a black oxide coated blade made of D2 steel that will stand up to hard use and gray G10 handle scales that provide a good grip in all conditions.
The 3″ drop point blade is made of D2 steel with a black oxide finish and has a hardness of 60-62 Rc. The gray G-10 handle scales have black coated stainless steel liners.
